There are many stories about giants. Some giants look like humans but have special powers. They might have unusual size or superhuman strength. Some are mean; others are friendly. The stories of giants are often oral histories or legends passed from generation to generation through storytelling. Others have been written down. However, most stories are mere attempts to provide moral lessons or explain something that humans cannot understand For instance, Jack and the Beanstalk is the story about a young boy who traded his family cow for magic beans. Jack’s mother thought that the trade was foolish and was very angry with Jack. However, the beans grew into a tall beanstalk that reached high into the home of a cruel giant whose house was filled with gold. Jack wanted to steal the giant’s golden treasure, but the giant could smell Jack whenever he sneaked into his house. The giant threatens to grind Jack’s bones to make bread, but Jack continues to take great risks. In the end Jack is rewarded with the cruel giant’s gold. There is also the story of Paul Bunyan, a giant lumberjack in North America. Paul Bunyan was powerful. He was seven feet tall and roamed the land with his blue ox named Babe. It is said that Paul was so strong that he created the Grand Canyon by pulling his ax on the ground behind him to dig a large hole. He piled stones to make the Rocky Mountains and created the Great Lakes as a watering hole for his ox Babe. Some giants are mean; others are friendly. Some are frightening like Frankenstein or the one-eyed Cyclops. People are afraid of them because they look different. But most giants are not real. They live in people’s imaginations and in the stories people tell. iv But there are real giants. We don’t often hear about them because they are ordinary people. Some of them lived a long time ago in places that no longer exist. However, a few giants came from a very special country called Finland – from an ancient region where some real giants were born.
